The Science of Sleep is absolutely, one of my favorite movies. i love Michel Gondry. this film is creepy and lovely and hauntingly sweet. surreal but totally realistic.
this is perhaps one of my favorite quotes from a movie, ever:
Stéphanie: Why me?
Stephane: Because everyone else is boring. And because you're different.

I also really like Science of Sleep but, as with most of Michel Gondry's movies, I don't really know if I "get" them. I'm sure there are about 30 other layers that I'm just not picking up on?
Have you seen Be Kind Rewind? Also Gondry I believe. I LOVED that movie. It incorporates a million other movies which is really cool. I was also really into the whole aspect of community.
In totally other non-Gondry talk, have you seen The Diving Bell and the Butterfly? I thought of this film for this post because it's in French (and Gondry is french, stretch I know). But I personally thought the cinematography was great, showing parts of France rarely shown in movies we see in the US. I think it also has amazing elements of reality and fantasy, but in a really painful, pretty way.
Aren't you glad you unlocked your comments??? Ha.
I completely forgot about Be Kind Rewind! I have wanted to see that since it came out ... but alas, I have not yet. It looked hysterical and not as weird as his other movies. And I am a huge fan of Mos Def.
And I think you probably do get his movies ... maybe there are 30 layers to them, but I think they're pretty simplistic in a lot of ways. There's just so much going on, visually, it seems like there's more layers.
I haven't seen The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, either, but I want to! Meredith went to see it when it was in theaters and told me she sobbed through the whole thing, and that it was one of the most beautiful movies she's ever seen. I need to see that, as well.
And yes! I am glad I unlocked my comments!!
