this is probably one of the only movies i could watch over and over again, ceaselessly. it was originally a play by Tony Kushner, adapted into a mini-series for HBO (so technically, not really a movie), and the adaption is not always the best, visually. and there are definitely parts where you can tell it's a play, from the dialogue.
but something about it ... i absolutely love. i love combinations of magic and realism, of fantastical happenings and watching stories you feel you've also encountered in your life, in some way.
i try to make everyone i know watch it (sorry, Kate). i understand the whole HIV/AIDS focus, coupled with Angels and other surreal happenings aren't everyone's bag. but there's more to it than that. it's a story about progress, movement, the pain of being alive but the beauty in it, as well. about how nothing good is ever easy, but it's the hardships we endure that make this whole mess worth it.
i'm making Crystal watch it now (and have been for the past couple weeks ... it's long! we watch it in chunks) and she likes it. success! we haven't finished it, yet, so i guess the success is pending, but ... i am optimistic.
and, if you like the show Weeds, the two main characters are in Angels in America (Mary Louise-Parker and Justin Kirk), and they're even more dynamic in this. and Al Pacino (as Roy Cohn), Patrick Wilson, and one of my favorite actors, Jeffrey Wright. and Meryl Streep. but i don't care for her. but a lot of people do, and maybe you're one of them.
in one of her character's words:
"An angel is a belief, with wings, and arms that can carry you. It's not to be afraid of, and if it can't hold you up, seek for something new."
